Digital Television Troubleshooting

You have a converter box and there's no sound on 4.1:
  • This is a known problem for some converters (RCA and Zinwell) that we're working on as of Oct. 6 and hope to have resolved within the next week. Magnavox DTV and Zenith DTT901 converter boxes appear to work okay. We're testing other models at the moment.

You have a converter box and channel 39 is missing:

  • Most inexpensive converters can't tune analog channels, ie, they don't "pass-through" the analog channels. The cable from the antenna must be disconnected from the converter box and connected directly to the TV.
Note that channel 39 will not remain analog.

You scan and don't get channels 2.1 and 4.1:

  • We think this may be related to the sound problem mentioned above and think it may be resolved when the sound problem is fixed. You might be able to manually add them to your TV/converter by following the procedure below, but it doesn't seem to work in all cases.
  • Access DTA 1080 converter boxes do not seem to pick up these channels at all.
  • The channels might be labelled 10.1 and 10.2 by your TV/converter. Go through the available channels and look for CBS and ABC.
  • Use this procedure to rescan for channels:
    1. Disconnect the antenna from your tv or converter box.
    2. Scan for channels. If you need instructions, please refer to the owner's manual for your device.
Your TV or converter won't find any channels and this step usually clears out the list of "already known" channels.
    3. Reconnect the antenna and scan for channels again.
    4. Run through the channels and see if CBS and ABC have been found.
  • If channels 2.1 and 4.1 still aren't found, try to manually input them into your TV or converter (Access DTA 1080 converters don't appear to have this capability):
    1. Go into the menu system of your TV/converter and "enable" channel 10.
Please check the owner's manual for the procedure. Unfortunately, there's tremendous variation in the menu systems, so it's impossible to come up with exact instructions in each case. Manuals are generally easy to find online by googling the model number of your device followed by the word "manual". For instance, I'd google for "Toshiba HDT320X manual" for my TV.
    2. Once channel 10 is enabled, you'll need to follow the manual's instructions for going to channels 2.1 and 4.1 (using the remote buttons to go to a specific digital channel).
    3. Do NOT do a full rescan after enabling channel 10 as rescanning typically starts by wiping the slate clean.
